Research at SpatLab focuses on the design, integration, and application of spatial database technologies for geospatial information management and spatial analytics. The laboratory investigates modern approaches to spatial data modeling, scalable database architectures, large-scale geospatial data processing, and the integration of heterogeneous data sources into unified geospatial information systems.

Our research encompasses relational, object-relational, and graph database systems, with particular emphasis on Spatial SQL, data interoperability, WebGIS technologies, and open standards for geospatial information. We develop methods that improve the organization, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of spatial data while enabling efficient spatial analysis and decision support.

A major research direction is the integration of geospatial, environmental, infrastructure, and measurement data to support advanced analytical workflows. The laboratory explores database-driven solutions for environmental monitoring, land deformation analysis, spatial information systems, digital representations of the built environment, and other applications requiring reliable and scalable geospatial data management.

Beyond methodological research, SpatLab provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration with academia, industry, and public administration. The laboratory supports research projects that advance database technologies, geospatial analytics, and next-generation spatial information infrastructures through open, interoperable, and reproducible approaches to geospatial data management.

Education

Education is a core mission of SpatLab. The laboratory supports the development of practical skills in spatial databases, geospatial data management, and modern geospatial technologies through research-oriented teaching and hands-on learning.

Students work in an environment that reflects contemporary professional practice, gaining experience with the design, implementation, and management of spatial database systems. The laboratory provides access to modern desktop, server-based, and web-enabled technologies for spatial data integration, geospatial analytics, WebGIS, and interoperable geospatial information systems.

SpatLab supports laboratory courses, team-based projects, seminars, undergraduate and graduate theses, as well as individual research initiatives. Students have the opportunity to work with real-world datasets and contemporary database technologies while developing competencies in spatial data modeling, database design, Spatial SQL, and scalable geospatial information management.

The laboratory also serves as a platform for continuing professional development by supporting specialized training and lifelong learning in geospatial database technologies for students, graduates, and professionals.
