On 3 March 2026, the Dean of the Faculty of Geo-Data Science, Geodesy, and Environmental Engineering at AGH University of Krakow approved the establishment of the SpatLab Spatial Database Laboratory.
The Laboratory is being created as a research and teaching environment supporting the development of scientific research and the modernisation of education in spatial databases, geoinformatics, geodata integration, geospatial analysis, and the processing and dissemination of spatial information.
The planned areas of scientific activity include the integration of geospatial data from multiple sources, the processing of large-scale datasets, real-time data analysis, geodata interoperability, and the use of modern database technologies in GIS, WebGIS, and spatial data infrastructures. The automation of geospatial analyses and the application of Big Data and GeoAI solutions in geoinformatics will also constitute important areas of research.
One of SpatLab’s main objectives is to create a working environment that enables the use of real-world data, various database models, and practical project scenarios applied in contemporary geoinformation systems.
The concept of establishing the Laboratory was consulted with members of the Faculty.
“Such a laboratory will provide the Faculty with a solid foundation for developing research on GeoAI and Big Data in GIS,”
emphasised Krystian Kozioł, DSc, Associate Professor at AGH University of Krakow.
Beata Hejmanowska, Professor, highlighted the Laboratory’s importance for the development of research on vector data:
“The Laboratory addresses an area of research related to the processing and dissemination of vector data that is currently underrepresented at the Faculty.”
SpatLab will support the delivery of classes, projects, and seminars, as well as diploma theses and research initiatives related to geoinformatics and spatial database environments.
The Laboratory is expected to commence its research activities in November 2026. Teaching activities are planned to begin on 1 March 2027, together with the launch of courses included in the curriculum of the new second-cycle specialisation in Geodata Science, currently being developed within the Geospatial Computer Science degree programme.
The Laboratory operates within the Department of Mining Areas Protection, Geoinformatics and Mining Geodesy at the Faculty of Geo-Data Science, Geodesy, and Environmental Engineering, AGH University of Krakow. Its Head is Artur Krawczyk, DSc, Associate Professor at AGH University of Krakow.
The Laboratory’s activities will be presented on social media under the hashtag #SpatLabAGH.
